THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

A grasshopper clings to a ripe persimmon, chewing at its orange flesh, the fruit hanging from a dark, gnarled branch. Hokusai renders the scene with a naturalist's eye: the persimmon's smooth gradient from green to gold, the grasshopper's delicate legs and antennae, the bark's rough black texture. Japanese text and a red seal balance the left and right. The close cropping makes the fruit monumental, a small drama of appetite played out on a single branch, observed with quiet delight. The original work is a color woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
