THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

This five-panel panorama opens a cross-section of the Ōgiya brothel on New Year's Day, its architecture stretching the full width of the design. Women in magnificent kimono — black, rust, green, and cream — move through tatami rooms, climb staircases, and gather on balconies, while attendants carry boxes and guests sit in quiet conversation. Hokusai organizes the bustle with crisp architectural lines: pillars, railings, and sliding screens divide the space into a rhythm of compartments, each holding its own small scene. The figures are drawn with elegant, flowing outlines and colored in soft, muted tones that keep the vast composition harmonious. Every panel rewards close looking — a standing screen here, a shrine alcove there, patterns on robes unfolding like catalogues. The original work is a pentaptych of color woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai, dated ca. 1804. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
