THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

The Roben waterfall drops in twin streams down a rocky cliff, its white water splitting around a central crag. At its foot, pilgrims bathe in the churning pool, their small naked figures dotting the blue-white foam, while others climb the rocks or rest on the banks. Wooden bathhouses with thatched roofs stand on both sides, their verandas overlooking the falls. Above, mist drifts across the cliff tops where pines cling. The composition moves from the busy bathing scene at the bottom up the falling water to the quiet heights. It is a picture of sacred refreshment — the waterfall as both spectacle and bath. The original work is a color woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, dated 1830-1834. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
