THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

A canary tumbles headlong among giant peonies, its wings spread and beak open as it dives toward the pink blossoms. Hokusai paints the peonies in soft coral washes, the layered petals opening like silk, while the little bird is all energy and ruffled feather, drawn in olive and cream. Green leaves frame the scene, and Japanese text runs down the right side with a red seal. The contrast of scale, the tiny bird against the enormous flowers, gives the print its charm, a moment of avian daring in a garden of giants. The original work is a color woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, dated 1833 or 1834. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
