THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

A swordsmith sits cross-legged on the floor, hammer raised over a small anvil where a glowing blade lies, his body leaning into the coming strike. Standing beside him, a woman in an elegant kimono holds a finished long sword upright, watching the work with calm attention. The scene is drawn with clean, confident lines and soft color washes — the smith's pale robe against the woman's patterned silk. Calligraphy fills the left margin, marking this as a surimono made for a poetry gathering. There is a pleasing tension between the craftsman's physical labor and the refined company he keeps, and between the violence the swords will serve and the quiet of the room. The original work is a woodblock print (surimono) in ink and color on paper by Katsushika Hokusai, dated 1802. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
