THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

Drawn in swift black ink, this sketch shows the warrior Yorimasa grappling with the nue, a monstrous chimera, its body a tangle of claws, fur, and a curling tail. The warrior's armored form bends over the beast, sword drawn, while arrows fly around them. Hokusai's brush moves fast here — the lines are rough, broken, and full of energy, with notes and corrections scribbled in the margins. It is a working drawing, not a finished picture: the artist thinking out loud on paper, testing how bodies twist in combat. The lack of finish is the point — we see the famous scene at the moment of invention, all motion and ink. The original work is an ink drawing on paper by Katsushika Hokusai. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
