A Group of Young Women Entering the Garden of a Horticulturist is a color woodblock print (surimono) by Katsushika Hokusai. The Art Institute of Chicago records it as undated. Surimono were privately commissioned prints, often exchanged by poetry circles rather than sold through the ordinary commercial market. Their limited circulation encouraged close looking and careful printing, and Hokusai repeatedly used the format to unite everyday objects or social occasions with literary culture. The title places a group of young women at the threshold of a cultivated garden, making arrival and social movement the central event. The subject rewards attention to the relationship between figures, clothing, and the ordered setting rather than to dramatic action. What makes the work especially rewarding is Hokusai’s economy: the subject remains immediately readable, yet line, interval, and scale continue to reveal new relationships on close viewing.
