THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

A woodcutter stands atop a massive wooden beam, planing its length while the plank rests tilted on tall trestles. Below him, companions saw and haul, a basket of shavings sits nearby, and at right a woman balances a bucket on her head as she crosses a log bridge over churning blue rapids, a child trailing behind. Blue-leaved trees frame the scene and distant hills close the horizon. Hokusai organizes the labor into clean diagonals — the beam, the trestles, the bridge — against the river's looping whorls. A poem panel and series cartouche occupy the upper right corner. One of the designs for the One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse series, it turns a working riverside into a lively genre scene. The original work is a color woodblock print (yoko oban) by Katsushika Hokusai, dated c. 1835/36. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
