This is my second painting, and I'm just as happy with this one as the first. I love how the brushwork gives each piece its own character. I'll probably be back for another.

It took longer than ordering something ready-made, but I knew this was being painted by hand. The finished piece was worth the wait. I just wish there had been a few more updates during the process.

THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

Two gamecocks face each other across an empty ground, heads lowered and beaks almost touching in the charged moment before combat. Hokusai paints them on silk with the patience of a naturalist: every feather layered in russet, black, and cream, the sickle tail plumes rising in glossy arcs, the scaled legs planted wide. A few spare branches and grasses sketch the setting, leaving the birds to command the plain tan background. The symmetry of their mirrored poses, necks craned and eyes fixed, turns the standoff into a study of tension and plumage. An inscription and red seal stand at the right edge, and the brocade mounting frames the whole like a window. The original work is a hanging scroll in ink and color on silk by Katsushika Hokusai, dated 1838. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
