THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK

A Closer Look

A single large festival mask floats on the bare paper, shown in profile with its features exaggerated for comic effect: bulging eyes with red rims, a broad nose, and a wide grimacing mouth. The mask's pale surface is shaded in soft grey tones that give the cheeks and brow a rounded, sculptural fullness, while red accents pick out the eyelids and lips. Columns of fine calligraphy run down the left side, the poems that made this surimono a New Year keepsake for a poetry club. The composition is daringly empty — one object, off-center, surrounded by paper — letting the mask's grotesque charm carry the whole design. Oni and Uzume masks like these were worn in folk dance and theater. The original work is a woodblock print (surimono) in ink and color on paper by Katsushika Hokusai, probably dating to 1807. This product is a hand-painted oil-on-canvas reproduction inspired by the original work.
